THE PRESIDENT'S CORNER

image of woman at a podiumIn this issue of the provincial newsletter, I will focus on the Provincial Annual General Meeting and Conference held on October 17, 18 and 19. This conference was held at the Ocean View Motel in Rocky Harbour and was hosted by the Gros Morne Literacy Council.

We were very fortunate this year to receive funding from the National Literacy Secretariat in Ottawa and this funding helped bring many students and volunteers to the conference.

Ms. Linda Coles, Executive Director the Literacy Branch of the Department of Education, attended the conference and sat in on the workshops and at the Annual General Meeting. She also actively participated in the Round Table session.

We also received a generous donation from the Red Ochre Regional Board toward conference costs. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those whose generosity helped us to experience a very successful conference.

At the Annual General Meeting, two new board members were elected. Monnie Moores from Grand Falls-Windsor, is the new Vice-President and Katherine Lockhart, from Corner Brook is the new secretary. I look forward to serving with them on the Provincial Board.

To all the councils, I would like to emphasize that you can contact any member of the Provincial Board with any questions or concerns you may have on council matters.

Hats Offimage

The Bay St. George Literacy Council recently opened a Learning Centre at 58 Oregon Drive in Stephenville. Space for the Centre was donated by the NL Housing Corporation. The Bay St. George Literacy Council offers one - to - one tutoring for adults, a Summer Reading For Fun Program and a Books for Babies Program. Nine volunteers work shifts around the clock to ensure the centre remains open for the benefit of the tutors and students.

Bev Hulan, President of the Bay St. George Literacy Council has worked hard to bring together a dedicated group of volunteers who contribute greatly toward the growth and development of Stephenville and the surrounding area.

Congratulations to Bev and the Bay St. George Council members. Bev can be reached at:

Peter Gzowski Golf (PGI) Tournament Book Grants

image of cartoon man carrying a huge stack of booksA letter was sent to the councils who qualified to order books and materials from the Peter Gzowski Grant money. Councils who reported students in the 2001 stats reports were pro - rated on the amount allotted from the grant money.

The NLLLC Board also purchased extra books and materials for those students who fall outside the jurisdiction of present councils. These materials will be housed at the Provincial Field Services Office and sent to tutors as needed.

The NLLLC Board purchased a complete set of Training by Design materials which will be housed with the Provincial Training Officer. These materials are available for loan upon request.

Many thanks to the Literacy Development Council for choosing the NLLLC Councils as recipients for this grant.

Training Corner

Not all councils have a workshop co-ordinator. However, if you are interested in setting up that position, here is a list of duties.

The Workshop Coordinator shall:

  • Keep a ‘Wait List' of potential trainees - up to 8 - 10 people.
  • Remain the contact person for all training participants.
  • Contact the current Provincial Training Officer or the Field Service Coordinator to request a training.
  • Co-ordinate with appropriate board members all aspects of the training. i.e. advertising, providing handout copies, providing training materials, booking a suitable site, etc.
  • Provide tea/coffee and snacks for the three breaks.
  • Submit the names of the trained tutors with their certificate stubs and 1.00 per participant to register the tutors in the National Development Office Database in Quebec.
