INTRODUCTION

We need a Name!

Welcome to the first edition of our new provincial newsletter! Thank you to the National Literacy Secretariat for providing the funds to produce a newsletter relevant to Laubach people in Newfoundland.

There was a provincial newsletter called the Puffin published in the late 1980's. The funding source for the newspaper publication disappeared many years ago.

The provincial executive hopes this newsletter will continue if adequate funding can be found to support the cost of publication and distribution. The newsletter is your communication tool with the rest of the province, so please make suggestions about what you want to read.

NLLLC will donate a prize of $50.00 in Newfoundland books to the council who proposes the winning name for this newsletter. Please send your suggestions to the provincial fieldworker before the AGM and the provincial body will choose the winner. The winning name will be announced at the banquet. Enter as often as you wish!

AGM Update

imageHats off to a great group of volunteers!

The Gros Morne Council in Rocky Harbour is hosting the Annual General Meeting and Conference again this year. What an energetic bunch!

The AGM will be held at the Ocean View Hotel in Rocky Harbour, October 17 to 19. If you have not received information from your council president about the AGM contact Isabella at 1 800 863-0373 or Holley Humber at 458-2860. NLLLC hopes councils are planning to send two representatives.

A proposal was sent to the National Literacy Secretariat for funding, but to date the application has not been approved.

Get your book orders ready!

The NL Laubach councils have received $5500.00 from the PGI Golf Tournament towards the cost of buying new books and materials for students. A letter to councils outlining how to order the materials will follow.

Hope your council completed the council stats report and sent it to the NL Provincial Training Officer, Lillian Moores!

Morrow Foundation Donation

The Morrow Foundation donated $2000.00 toward the cost of the Summer Reading for Fun training. This, combined with money left from 2001 and money from Laubach Literacy of Canada, paid the expenses for the tutors to come to a training session in Corner Brook again this year.
